Lichen planus is a common disease and inflammatory medical condition that causes swelling on your skin or irritation inside your mouth. Lichen planus produces a rash that is frequently itchy on your skin.
It may cause burning sensation or pain inside your mouth. Women are more likely than men to get the oral variant of the disease.
Which part does lichen planus affect?
Lichen planus affects the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes. Purplish, itchy, flat pimples on the inner forearm, wrist, ankle, and occasionally the genitals are common indications and symptoms. Itching and lacy white patches in the mouth, on the lips or tongue, painful sores in the mouth or vagina, hair loss, change in scalp colour, and nail damage or loss are additional common symptoms. Over the course of a few weeks or months, these lesions can grow and spread throughout the body.

In most cases, lichen planus is not infectious.

Lichen planus is common in middle-aged adults. Women are more likely to get oral lichen planus. However it can be seen in children and younger age groups as well.
