Acute pancreatitis is a condition characterized by the sudden inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas is an organ located in the upper abdomen, behind the stomach. It plays a crucial role in the digestion and regulation of blood sugar levels by producing enzymes and hormones.
Dr Ronak Ajmera says the exact cause of acute pancreatitis is often difficult to determine, but the condition is commonly triggered by one or more of the following factors:
- Gallstones: One of the most common causes of acute pancreatitis is the presence of gallstones. These are small, solid particles that form in the gallbladder and can block the pancreatic duct, leading to inflammation.
- Alcohol consumption: Chronic and excessive alcohol consumption is another significant cause of acute pancreatitis. Alcohol can irritate and damage the pancreatic tissue, leading to inflammation.
- Trauma or injury: Injury to the abdomen, such as a car accident or a severe blow, can cause acute pancreatitis.
- Certain medications: Certain medications, such as certain antibiotics, corticosteroids, and some chemotherapy drugs, have been associated with an increased risk of pancreatitis.
- Infections: Some viral infections, such as mumps, can cause pancreatitis.
- Elevated triglyceride levels: Very high levels of triglycerides (a type of fat) in the blood can also lead to acute pancreatitis.
Less common causes include certain genetic disorders, autoimmune diseases, anatomical abnormalities of the pancreas or bile ducts, and endoscopic procedures involving the pancreas.
