Can Keratoconus be cured?

Eye Doctor in Andheri East

As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, there isn’t a definitive cure for keratoconus, a progressive eye disorder that affects the cornea. However, there are various treatment options available to manage the condition and improve visual function. These treatments include:

1-Glasses or contact lenses: In the early stages of keratoconus, eyeglasses or soft contact lenses may be sufficient to correct vision.2-Rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses: These lenses can help provide better visual acuity by compensating for the irregular shape of the cornea in keratoconus.3-Corneal cross-linking (CXL): This is a procedure that involves applying a special type of ultraviolet light and riboflavin (vitamin B2) eye drops to strengthen the cornea and slow down the progression of keratoconus.4-Intacs: These are small plastic inserts that are surgically placed in the cornea to help reshape it and improve vision.5-Corneal transplant (keratoplasty): In severe cases where other treatments are not effective, a corneal transplant may be considered. This involves replacing the damaged cornea with a healthy donor cornea. It’s essential to consult with an eye care professional for a thorough examination and to discuss the most appropriate treatment plan based on the individual’s specific condition. Additionally, advancements in medical research and technology may lead to new treatments in the future.Experience clear vision with Dr. Seema Bhel, your trusted eye doctor in Andheri East.
